Choryo Brewing Company Nara Prefecture Choryo Brewing Company is located in Koryo-cho town to the northwest of Nara, which is said to be the birthplace of sake. The town is surrounded by historical heritages: to the north lies Horyu-ji temple, a World Heritage site; to the south is Asuka-dera, the first Buddhism temple in Japan; and Omiwa Jinja, to the east, is a shrine dedicated to the God of Sake. The brewer’s dedication and special attention to rice, water, people, and sake brewing is a direct reflection of the brewery’s motto, “shōdō mukyūkyoku”, which translates “self-satisfaction shall be avoided for one can always better themselves.
