A bountiful sea

This “katakuchi,” a serving vessel with a spout is made using a firing technique known as “hotarude,” in which the small holes forming the wave pattern in the ceramic are filled with transparent glaze. This one has mica gold — the silicate minerals painted on the rim. When filled with sake, this katakuchi seems like an ocean, the golden rim rays of sunset over a calm sea. Delightful down to the smallest detail.
